Daniel Thomas Turley Murphy OSA (born January 25, 1943 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ) is an American clergyman , emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of Chulucanas in Peru and environmental activist.

Life

Daniel Thomas Turley was born in Chicago as a descendant of Irish immigrants. In 1960 he joined the Augustinian order . The Order sent him to Mexico to study there. In 1968 he was ordained a priest . As a result of the mission call of Pope Paul VI. for Latin America he went to Peru. There he initially worked as a priest and missionary in the Chulucanas diocese in Peru, including pastor of the parishes of Ayabaca, Huancabamba and Morropón.

On May 25, 1996 Daniel Thomas Turley was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Chulucanas diocese. The Bishop of Chulucanas, Juan Conway McNabb , ordained him episcopal on August 17, 1996 . On October 28, 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him to succeed Juan Conway McNabb as the second bishop of Chulucanas.

His work as an environmentalist brought him not only friends: During the uprisings of the local population against mining projects in their region, Diocesan Bishop Turley tried to serve as a mediator. This made him the enemy of the corporations and brought him various death threats.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on April 2, 2020.
