Danny Ray Thompson (born October 1, 1947 in New York City , † March 12, 2020 in Philadelphia ) was an American jazz musician ( bassoon , saxophone , flute ) who was best known as a long-time member of the Sun Ra Arkestra .

Live and act

Thompson grew up in Detroit . Many artists stayed in his family's hotel. Then he lived in Los Angeles, where he graduated from high school in 1965 and played in various bands. Back in New York he attended the Juilliard School of Music and was tutored by Garvin Bushell and, for a short time, by James Spaulding . In 1966 he worked at Babatunde Olatunji . In 1967 he was accepted into the Arkestra , with which he toured internationally and, beginning with The Solar-Myth Approach , recorded numerous records. He managed the orchestra for ten years and was responsible for the production of its El Saturn recordings. He did not belong to the orchestra for a break of about seven years from the mid-1990s. Since then he has played again as an active member of the Sun Ra Arkestra and has been touring with the band frequently; the last time in Europe 2019.

In the 1970s he was also active in the funk band Black Heat , with whom he recorded the album Keep On Runnin ' , which was released in 1975 on Atlantic Records . In the field of jazz, Thompson was involved in 118 recording sessions between 1967 and 2015, according to Tom Lord ; besides his numerous recordings with the Arkestra also with Jeffrey Hayden Shurdut / Marshall Allen / Motoko Shimizu and with the Dick Griffin Septet ( Homage to Sun Ra ); lastly Lord names The Heliosonic Tonetette ( Heliosonic Toneways Vol. 1 ).
