The Darßwald is a forest area on the western part of the Darß peninsula . There are no settlements in the forest area. Surrounding places are Ahrenshoop and Born in the south and Wieck and Prerow in the east. The Darßwald covers 5800 hectares and is part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park . The area around Darßer Ort and the north-western part of the forest area belong to protection zone 1, in which no human use should occur and natural development of the areas is sought.

history

The areas were created in the context of the compensation coast as beach wall fans , which is recognizable today as a system of walls (local name: Reff ) and damp lowlands ( Riegen ). The sea level was higher 3000 years ago, so that former cliff coasts such as the Old Sea Shore can be found in the interior of the Darß Forest.

In the past, the Darßwald was often used as pastureland. Unusually grown beech trees indicate this. The times of occupation of Pomerania by the Danes and French led to clear cuts in the Darß Forest. Taken yew were used for example as Innenvertäfelung the Danish castles Amalienborg and Rosenborg . The areas were reforested by Prussian foresters using fast-growing softwoods such as spruce, larch and Douglas fir. The pines were resinated in GDR times.

The Darßwald was already used by the Pomeranian dukes as a hunting ground in the Middle Ages. The Swedish king in the 19th century and in the 20th century Hermann Göring and hunters of the SED leadership in GDR times also used the Darßwald as a state hunting area. The result was and is a greatly increased game population, especially red deer and roe deer . The bison population released in the 1930s became extinct in 1945.

Ferdinand von Raesfeld (1855–1929), whose grave is located in the middle of the Darßwald, made special contributions to the reforestation of the Darß Forest and the protection of game . Today the forest and hunting museum in Born is dedicated to him.

Flora and fauna

The reefs and ranks in the Darßwald run mainly in a west-east direction. Tree species on the higher reefs are pine , common oak and common beech . The lower rows are covered with alders. The bracken covers a large part of the soil and, together with a high density of game, prevents natural regeneration of the tree population.
