Darco (horse)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Darco (born June 12, 1980 - June 19, 2006 ) was an internationally successful show jumping horse. He is considered to be one of the most important show jumping sires today.

ancestry

The sire of the dark brown stallion Darco was the Hanoverian stallion Lugano van la Roche . On the dam's side, Darco goes back to Gelderland horses, the dam's sire was the Holstein stallion Codex .

Sports

Darco was the successful horse of the Belgian show jumper Ludo Philippaerts , who later rode several offspring of Darco . Philippaerts took over Darco, already a sire at the time, at the age of five. That year he won the Belgian Show Jumping Championship for five-year-old horses. With Ludo Philippaerts he took part in European and World Championships as well as World Cup finals. In addition, both took part in the 1992 Olympic Games , where they achieved seventh place in the individual ranking.

Darco was retired from sport at the end of 1993 at the large indoor equestrian tournament in Mechelen. After his sports career, Darco was still active as a breeding stallion. He died of old age at the age of 26.

breed

As the father of more than 3000 horses, many of which were or are also active in top-class sport, Darco is one of the most important show jumping sires today. From the year of his death until 2011, he led the jumping horse sire ranking of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH), only in 2012 he was ousted here by Rodrigo Pessoa's successful stallion Baloubet du Rouet .

Well-known descendants of Darco include Winningmood (rider: Ludo Philippaerts and Luciana Diniz ), Sapphire ( McLain Ward ), Socrates ( Edwina Alexander ) and Narcotique de Muze ( Eric Lamaze ).
