Darcy Anthony Robinson (born May 3, 1981 in Kamloops , British Columbia , † September 27, 2007 in Asiago , Italy ) was an Italian - Canadian ice hockey player .

Career

Robinson first played from 1997 to 2001 in the Canadian Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades and Red Deer Rebels . With the Rebels he won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the championship of the WHL, and the tournament for the Memorial Cup , the championship of the Canadian Hockey League at the end of the 2000/01 season . During this time he was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the eighth round in 233rd position.

After his time in the junior division, the defender switched to the professional division and signed a contract with the organization of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which he only used in their farm teams between 2001 and 2005 , the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL and the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins used in the American Hockey League . After his contract expired, Robinson moved to Europe in the summer of 2005, where he signed a contract with Asiago Hockey in the Italian Serie A1 . There he played until September 2007, when he fell on the ice in the season opening game after less than four minutes of the 2007/08 season against SV Ritten-Renon without the influence of an opponent. He died a little later in Asiagos hospital or on the way there. This has not been clarified due to different information in different sources. Sudden cardiac death is suspected to be the cause of death .

His jersey number 5 has been banned from Asiago Hockey.
