Darkstar One is a computer game for Windows and Xbox 360 . It is a science fiction genre mix, developed by the German game author Daniel Dumont , and is based on a story by the science fiction author Claudia Kern , who also wrote some Perry Rhodan novels. After Ascaron went bankrupt and Kalypso Media took over the rights , it was digitally re-released as Darkstar One: Broken Alliance with support for 1080p and improved game mechanics.

action

The player takes on the role of the young escort pilot Kayron Jarvis. He tries to clear up the mysterious death of his father who left him the "Darkstar One". The spaceship is a long-range Terran fighter based on alien artifacts with which Kayron travels the galaxy. The investigation takes the young Kayron through the entire galaxy, where he encounters five different alien races. It gradually becomes clear that the "Darkstar One" itself is the key to solving the riddle.

Gameplay

The game principle is known from titles such as Elite , Wing Commander: Privateer , X: Beyond the Frontier or Freelancer .

The player travels a galaxy comprising 300 systems. He gets the eponymous spaceship "Darkstar One" right at the beginning of the game. In the beginning, this is a genre-typical long-range fighter with quite simple equipment. The player now has the opportunity to travel freely through the galaxy in order to collect alien artifacts there, with the help of which he can continue to expand the "Darkstar One". This takes place in the ship's areas of the hull, wings and engines. By expanding the ship, the player will be able to install better and better equipment on his ship. A total of over 200 weapon and equipment systems are available to the player for this purpose. This allows additional hull weapons, missiles or even self-firing turrets to be attached. A special feature is the expandable plasma weapon with its own technology tree , with which you can inflict damage on several opponents at the same time or paralyze their ship electronics for a while.

All modifications to the spaceship require the necessary change and artifacts, which the player must first earn. Different options are offered for this. Depending on the nature of the player, it is possible to work as a mercenary, bounty hunter, ore prospector, escort pilot, trader, smuggler or even a pirate. But despite the high level of player freedom, the game is clearly designed for action. Space battles are the main part of the game.

The story missions are always clearly recognizable and lead the player like a red thread through the universe. In addition, some quite complex side missions such as espionage, photo assignments, pirate hunts and patrol flights can be taken on at trading stations. The single-player game comes alive with the option of sparking all ships in the area, for example to provide escort for freighters - or to extort their freight from them. A trading system like the Port Royale game calculates prices based on supply and demand, and the player's deliveries affect the price. Therefore there are no static trade routes. Brave natures can also try their hand at smuggling, but be careful: your own ship should already have anti-police scanning equipment in order to simulate the ship's contents. The game gets its atmosphere by listening to radio messages from other ships and stations. Certain missions take place on the planet's surface in canyons and tunnel mazes. In addition, the player can control turrets of space stations in some places.

development

The game uses the trading system from Ascaron's earlier game Port Royale 2 . The game story was developed by the science fiction and fantasy author Claudia Kern , who, in addition to book publications, has also written articles for Perry Rhodan , Atlan and Maddrax . Numerous interim videos and messages from the Galactic Council that can be called up at terminals support the progress of the story. From a technical point of view, the game offers Shader 2.0 support, 7.1 sound and supports widescreen resolutions, with high-resolution textures and lots of detail. It is controlled either by mouse or joystick, together with keyboard commands. The delivery takes place on DVD or via Steam.

In Darkstar One there are also numerous allusions to other science fiction topics, such as B. Star Trek as well as on fast food chains and on Ascaron itself.

Many players regret the lack of multiplayer mode. In addition, most of the space stations look the same and the supporting roles were only poorly synchronized. Some players also see the interludes that were too difficult (for example the anti-aircraft missions), which disturbed the otherwise good atmosphere, as disturbing. A single point of criticism was also the repetitions in the mission design - on the other hand, many reviews praised the very varied mission design compared to similar games and the “exciting” main campaign. The various extras, such as the different ship modifications and the upgrade system of the "Darkstar One" are praised by players and magazines as well as the precise controls and the good story. By and large, Darkstar One gained recognition from gamers and critics as it filled a niche in the space game market.
