The Weststadt , not to be confused with Darmstadt-West , is an area in Darmstadt which connects to the core city and extends in the north to the Merck company and in the south to Eschollbrücker Straße. This area is also known as the "western workplace belt". The city of Darmstadt defines 9 districts, see list of districts of Darmstadt . The Weststadt is not defined as a district, only the West district , which includes another area.

With the above definition, the area probably includes (is not defined more precisely) the districts of Waldkolonie (with Europaviertel ), Mornewegviertel , Pallaswiesenviertel , Am Kavalleriesand and the Verlagerviertel , which are located in the north and west districts. The main station thus forms the center of the western city.

Urban development Weststadt

The Weststadt project describes the process of restructuring in Weststadt, which was made possible by the vacated areas. "The heterogeneous mixed area should become an attractive, urban location for trade, living and culture, in which a large number of jobs and residents can be settled." As part of this process, the Europaviertel was created on the former Bosch site. The expansion of the main train station in 2000 provided access to the west side of the main train station and thus better connections with public transport. Weststadt was described in the explanatory report on the 2006 land use plan of the city of Darmstadt as a focus of urban development.

history

Development in the Weststadt area began at the end of the 19th century. Industrial and commercial enterprises, barracks, publishing houses, research and educational institutions settled along the railway tracks, which were relocated from Steubenplatz to the west in 1912 with the main station. Residential quarters also emerged here and there. The area, which has grown over a period of around 100 years, has developed into the largest workplaces focus for Darmstadt and the region.

present

A structural change has been underway in Darmstadt's Weststadt for several years, which was made the focus of urban development, especially under Darmstadt's Lord Mayor Peter Benz (in office until 2005). The district, which has hitherto been predominantly commercial, is increasingly developing into an urban space for commerce, living and culture. 30,000 people have their jobs here, 12,000 live here. The gross value added in Weststadt is around 2.5 billion euros per year. Settlements are particularly evident in the European quarter (Europahaus, Atrium Office, T-Online ). The area surrounding the main train station hub has been expanded and modernized. New residential areas were designated and existing ones expanded.
