Darren John Hughes (born October 6, 1965 in Prescot ) is a retired English football player . The fast left full-back began his career at first division club Everton , but could not assert himself there and was later active as a long-time player of Port Vale in the second and third division. After a serious injury that put him out of action for two years, he left the career at Northampton Town , Exeter City and Morecambe FC leak.
Athletic career
Hughes was one of the most promising talents as a youth player at Everton and in the 1983/84 season he won the FA Youth Cup with the youth team . The young left-back had already played in the first team and represented John Bailey on December 27, 1983 in the 3-0 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers . In an increasingly top-class team, however, it was difficult for him to find his place from then on, and neither in the FA Cup victory in 1984 nor in winning the English championship in 1985 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in the same year, he played no significant role. Only in the last two insignificant league games against Coventry City (1: 4) and Luton Town (0: 2) did he play as part of a "B-Elf". In the absence of a sporting perspective, Everton FC let him move to Shrewsbury Town in June 1985 on a free transfer .
After a nervous start, Hughes found more security in his game in the center of defense and in midfield. He became an important factor in the ultimately successful battle for relegation and after a substitution he scored the decisive winner against FC Middlesbrough , which then had to go into the third division. He played his way into the hearts of the supporters and it was all the more bitter for them to move to league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion for £ 35,000 at the end of September 1986 . In Brighton Hughes often acted much more offensively in left attacking midfield or even in the attacking center, but with 26 league appearances he could not prevent the "seagulls" from relegating bottom of the table in the third division after the 1986/87 season.
In the third highest English division, Hughes acted after his move in September 1987 for Port Vale . There he was also "set" again on his left defense and in the years that followed he developed into a "long-runner". Within two years, with 87 league appearances, he was part of a team that began to rise from midfield in the third division and managed this after play-off successes against Preston North End and the Bristol Rovers . Back in the Second Division, he helped the team as a regular player to secure relegation, but had to suffer a first setback in the 1990/91 season when two operations were necessary after a hernia and he missed most of the games. Further adversity followed in the 1991/92 season, when Hughes returned to his original position with 42 inserts, but the "Valiants" were relegated to the third division as bottom of the table. Far more serious, however, was a more serious hamstring injury that put Hughes out of action for more than two years. This even went so far that the association released him in February 1994, whereupon Hughes successfully sued the labor court in a process that lasted until August 1994 for reinstatement. Regardless, he left the club in November 1994.
The fourth division Northampton Town enabled him to start over in January 1995 and with a monthly contract he completed 13 competitive games for the "Cobblers" at the end of the 1994/95 season. Shortly after the beginning of the following season in 1995/96, he went to league rivals Exeter City in November 1995 , where he took over the left side of defense and convinced again with defensive qualities and an offensive urge. In the following year, despite 36 appearances in the league, he again had to fight more and more with injuries, but turned out to be reliable, especially on his trips into midfield. In the 1997/98 season he was last active in the Football Conference for Morecambe FC .
