The Secret of the Hemmaberg "The Ostrogoths in Carinthia" is an Austrian documentary film that was shot in 2009 under the direction of Malte Olschewski and Ferdinand Macek. It takes place in the southern bilingual Slovene / German part of Carinthia ( Globasnitz ), and is based on a cultural-historical, archaeological background that has significantly influenced the historical development of Carinthia.

action

This documentation lets a previously dark period of Carinthian history appear in a new light. The film reveals the secret of the Hemmabberg, on which a Gothic-Arian church once stood. After his victory over Odoacer in 493, the Ostrogothic King Theodoric took over most of the Roman territories, including the inland Noricum region with Carinthia in the center. The important road station Iuenna, today Globasnitz , had a Gothic military garrison, which was withdrawn in 536 because of the war against Byzantium. The Goths therefore ruled over Carinthia for only 43 years. During construction work a few years ago on the outskirts of Globasnitz the largest Eastern Gothic burial ground in Europe was discovered and exposed. The determination of the second church on the summit of the Hemmaberges has now been clearly clarified. The documentation tries to trace the history of the Ostrogothic empire, which perished in 552 in the battle of Mons Lactarius . The tension extends to the present day, as a living tradition has developed around the Hemmaberg.

Filming

Malte Olschewski and Ferdinand Macek shot this film in the style of a classic cultural documentary in 45 minutes. TV format. As a historian, archaeologist and specialist in "Early Christianity in the Alpine region" , Professor Franz Glaser from the State Museum of Carinthia was involved as a consultant.
