The environmental activist Jens Groote runs a breeding station for orphaned young seals on a North Sea island; the young Saskia Janssen assists him as does his son Patrick, who has reached the age of teens. His mother died in a car accident and so he is looking for a replacement by mail in a bottle. The bottle was found on the banks of the Elbe in Hamburg by 10-year-old Melanie, whose father left her mother, the lawyer Corinna Jakobs. She represents the fish manufacturer and fishing fleet owner Petersen for her law firm, who is attacked by Groote at sea and in newspapers and has sued him for failure to defamation and 50,000 DM for damages. A vacation on a Wadden Sea island is exactly the right thing for Melanie's chronic cough and so she drives with her mother to the island where her pen pal and father live. The lawyer would like to take the opportunity to reach an out-of-court settlement with Groote, but Groote is reluctant to settle. The children initiate opportunities to get to know their parents privately, but his assistant seems to have had an eye on Groote and Bruno Höhler, Corinna Jakobs' colleague and fiancé, visits them on the island. Nevertheless, the two single parents get closer.
At the trial before the district court, Groote appears without the required lawyer, but with a young seal and indicates that humans have alternative sources of food, but that a seal depends on fish. Groote loses, but Corinna Jakobs has demanded the 50,000 DM in favor of an environmental organization and not for Petersen and is now resigning from the law firm because she only wants to deal with cases that are morally justifiable for her.
When the two parents have to save their children from distress at sea, in which they are caught by a heart problem with the boat operator Grandpa Harms, the environmentalist and the lawyer finally set the course for a future together.

“A Degeto film with the title 'Happiness is an island' gives rise to fears of the worst. The feel-good romance by Gloria Behrens, which is completely predictable from the plot, but excellently cast right down to the supporting roles, offers genre-typical light-hearted (= shallow) entertainment of the romantic kind - with humor, a lot of feeling, a lot of sea & a bit of ecological message. "
