The Westphalian steamboat

The Westphälische Dampfboot emerged from the Weserdampfboot was a left-democratic to early socialist weekly in the German Vormärz .

The Westphalian steamboat. Edition March 1846

In January 1844 the magazine Weserdampfboot appeared for the first time . It was initially edited by A. Osterwald. At first the paper appeared twice a week. Since November 1844 it became a monthly with a greatly expanded scope. The sheet first appeared in Lemgo and later in Minden , it was edited in Rinteln ( Kurhessen ). The distribution of production should undermine the state license requirement.

Beyond the province of Westphalia , it gained importance as a left-democratic newspaper. One of the most productive authors was Otto Lüning . He published his socialist views in the Weser steamboat in November 1844. The main financier was the linen dealer Rudolf Rempel from Bielefeld .

Because of its political stance, the paper was banned by the Hessian and Prussian governments in December 1844. The successor organ appeared under the title Das Westfälische Dampfboot first in the Julius Helmich publishing house in Bielefeld and from 1847 in the Wilhelm Crüwell publishing house in Paderborn . The editing was taken over by Otto Lüning, who was also the editor from 1845 to 1848.

The main focus was on the situation of the lower classes, socialist theories and general political questions. From the middle of 1846 in particular, the socialist orientation of the magazine increased.

Last but not least, Joseph Weydemeyer contributed to this. Authors include Friedrich Engels , Moses Hess , Karl Marx , Friedrich Schnake , Emil Weller , Ferdinand Wolff and Wilhelm Wolff .

After the March Revolution , the steamboat reappeared twice a week. Since the number of subscribers was insufficient to cover the costs, the newspaper was discontinued in May 1848. The Westphalian friend of the people continued the tradition of the steam boat. Both magazines were printed in the Bielefeld printing company JD Küster .

Today the Westfälisches Dampfboot publishing house continues the tradition of the paper.
