Alfred Wesselmann (* 1948 in Mettingen ) is a German high school teacher , historian and author.

Life

Alfred Wesselmann grew up in his native Mettingen on Ibbenbürener Straße. He attended elementary school in the peasantry Wiehe, then the secondary school in Mettingen and then moved to the Goethe-Gymnasium Ibbenbüren . After graduating from high school, he completed a teaching degree for history and English. He also taught these two subjects as a teacher at the Hannah-Arendt-Gymnasium Lengerich, most recently as director of studies , until he retired at the beginning of 2013. He also worked at the center for practical teacher training in Rheine .

As a local historian, Alfred Wesselmann has dealt with various aspects of the history of the city of Lengerich , often in close collaboration with Heinrich Schlueter. Wesselmann is involved in the Lengerich Heimatverein, of which he is chairman of the “Urban History Working Group”.

His interests and research focus is the democratic movement in Westphalia in the Vormärz and in the revolution of 1848/49 . In several years of work he researched the life and work of Hermann Krieges (1820–1850) particularly intensively , which resulted in a biography of the Westphalian revolutionary. This dissertation fraternity, revolutionary, democrat Hermann wars and the liberation movement 1840-1850 Alfred Wesselmann was in 2002 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster for Dr. phil. PhD . In the same year, together with Heinrich Schlueter, he also published a two-volume collection of sources with letters from the war as well as criminal files and press publications.

In connection with these studies, another book was published on Das Westphälische Dampfboot , a left-democratic to early socialist weekly in Vormärz, which appeared in 2004. With the county Tecklenburg in 1848/49. German politics as reflected in provincial conditions (2012) Wesselmann once again focused on the eventful period from the March Revolution to the Frankfurt National Assembly . The events of that time in the Tecklenburg district proved to be of national interest, not least because personalities such as Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler and Karl Heinrich Brüggemann competed there against each other throughout Germany .

Furthermore, in 2008 Wesselmann presented a biography of the pastor and missionary Eberhard Herrmann Röttger (1800–1888). His contributions have also appeared in various specialist journals and school publications, but also in Unser Kreis , the yearbook for the Steinfurt district , the yearbook for research on the history of the labor movement and in the Westphalia yearbook .

The historian is a member of the “American Network - Network for Westphalian Emigration to America since the 19th Century”.

Alfred Wesselmann lives and works in Lengerich.
