Live and act

Lüning was baptized as Heinrich Otto Lüning on March 20, 1818 in Gütersloh. His parents were the pastor Johann Friedrich Lüning and Johanna Luisa Amalia Velhagen. His brother Hermann Lüning was a Germanist; his brother August Lüning is a physician. His maternal grandfather was a canon in Quernheim . He attended high school in Bielefeld from 1827 and passed the school leaving examination there in 1834. On June 5, 1847, he married Sophia Luise Schwenger, daughter of Carl Gottfried Schwenger and Auguste Caroline Tüschen in Rheda.

During his studies he became a member of the Greifswald Reading Club and Weapons Club in 1834 and of the Raczek fraternity in Breslau in 1835 . After studying theology and medicine in Greifswald and Breslau , which he completed in 1839 with a doctorate under Professor Purkyně , Otto Lüning worked in Rheda from 1840 to 1850 as a doctor , surgeon and obstetrician. During this time he founded the Rhedaer Kreis (also: Holter Kreis ), which met regularly at the Holte hunting lodge and aimed to overcome the glaring social grievances that existed in Westphalia and many other German areas at the time. Lüning was elected to the board of the aid association in Rheda. Further goals were a united fatherland and the development of workers' aid associations .

During this time there was close contact with Julius Vortriede, who was then a teacher in Gütersloh, and with the lawyer Friedrich David Groneweg . For a time Lüning, who was in contact with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels , was a member of the Communist League . From 1845 to 1848 he was publisher and sole editor of the newspaper Das Westphälische Dampfboot . From 1848 to 1850 Lüning and his brother-in-law Joseph Weydemeyer were the responsible editor of the Neue Deutsche Zeitung , which from October 1, 1848 was the official organ of the left-wing members of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

After the forced dissolution of the National Assembly, Otto Lüning fled to Switzerland and lived in Zurich until his wife's death in 1856 . He then returned to Rheda, where he resumed his work as a doctor. From 1862 to 1867 Lüning sat as a representative of a Berlin constituency in the Prussian House of Representatives. He was initially a member of the German Progressive Party and after its split in 1866 switched to the National Liberals . From 1864 Lüning was also editor-in-chief of the Westfälische Zeitung in Dortmund .
