Hermann Lüning (born November 5, 1814 in Gütersloh ; † August 12, 1874 in Zurich ) was a German specialist in German . He was the first Edda translator and the author of several school books.

His parents were the Protestant pastor Johann Friedrich Lüning and his wife Johanna Luisa Amalia Velhagen. His brother Otto Lüning was a well-known publicist and member of the Prussian House of Representatives, his brother August Lüning a medical doctor.

Life

After his father had moved to Schildesche, he attended the Bielefeld grammar school and went to Greifswald University at Easter 1833 to study theology there. However, he was primarily concerned with oriental languages under Johann Gottfried Ludwig Kosegarten (the son of the poet Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten ) and with classical philology under Georg Friedrich Schömann . During his studies in 1833 he became a member of the old Greifswalder Burschenschaft / Arminia Greifswald and in 1834 a member of the fraternity reading circle, society of people's friends and arms club Greifswald .

During the general persecution of the German fraternities after the Frankfurt assassination attempt, Lüning was relegated after six weeks' imprisonment and for some time held a position as private tutor for a country gentleman in the Grand Duchy of Posen . In 1837 he went to Breslau , was arrested again and taken to Silberberg in Silesia (just as Fritz Reuter ’s time for the fortress was over there), simply because he had belonged to a small circle in Greifswald in which free-thinking political writings were read and discussed.

During his three-year imprisonment (he was sentenced to six years), he switched to studying Old German by name .

When Friedrich Wilhelm IV took office , he was also given amnesty and went to Halle (Saale) to resume his studies; In 1843 he wanted to take the senior teacher exam, but was suddenly expelled by the Halle police and lived for a long time as a journalist and private scholar in Bielefeld .

In 1845 he got a position at a private institute in Zurich and in 1848 he was elected to teach German language and history at the Cantonal School in Zurich (industrial department), an office which Lüning faithfully performed until his death on August 12, 1874.
