The Junge Orchester NRW (djoNRW) has been offering talented schoolchildren, students and young professionals the opportunity to play together in a highly qualified orchestra since 1985. It is conducted by its founder, the university music director Ingo Ernst Reihl .

history

Founded in 1985, it was important to the orchestra members from the start that the young orchestra NRW was not subject to any institution. It feels connected to the Rhine / Ruhr area, but not to a single city. It is a free community of people who are united by the desire to make music in a variety of ways - pupils, amateur and professional musicians on an equal footing. The endeavor to dedicate oneself to both well-known and rarely performed works (especially those from the 20th and 21st centuries) has proven itself over the past few years. The regular cooperation with the choir of the University of Witten / Herdecke as well as other choirs in North Rhine-Westphalia and soloists from different nations has enabled the young orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia to constantly expand its repertoire with large oratorios for many years.

Above all, the symphonic repertoire of the Romantic and Late Romantic periods has become the hallmark of the orchestra, so that the great symphonies by Gustav Mahler , Johannes Brahms , Antonín Dvořák , Anton Bruckner , Pjotr Tchaikovsky , Dmitri Shostakovich and others in exciting combinations of the program composition alongside rarely heard works to get presented.

Numerous soloists have already taken the opportunity to perform with the young orchestra NRW several times. In recent years, these have included the pianist Carl Wolf from Krystian Zimerman's master class, the violinists Annette Walther (member of the Signum Quartet), Pia Grutschus and Kathy Kang, master student at the Manhattan School of Music with Pinchas Zukerman, as well as the Israeli- American cellist Amit Peled.

Outstanding projects

2008

In cooperation with the Ensemble musikFabrik and the Duisburg Philharmonic, the djoNRW organized an academy for the world premiere of two works by Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim at the WDR Music Festival, which were unanimously praised by the public and the trade press and could be heard nationwide in the radio media. In the field of children's concerts, after the great success of “The Selfish Giant” by Stefan Heucke from 2006, the musical fairy tale “The Dung Beetle” by Andreas N. Tarkmann was performed in the Philharmonie Essen . The concert was followed in February 2012 by another cooperation within the framework of a family concert under the title “1 A Klassik”, which was moderated by Juri Tetzlaff .

2011

Choir of the “1. KiS Charity Gala "in Düsseldorf and the 6th" Hope Gala "in the Dresden theater. In 2012 the orchestra was again a guest at the 7th Hope Gala in Dresden.

In the summer of 2012 the djoNRW performed Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony in C minor "Resurrection Symphony" with four concerts in the Philharmonie Essen, Olpe, the historic town hall of Wuppertal and St Ludgerus (Billerbeck) . In 2012 the orchestra was again a guest at the 7th Hope Gala in Dresden.

2014

In 2014 the orchestra presented two major projects with works by American, Russian and German composers: In January 2014, the Junge Orchester NRW performed again together with the pianist Carl Wolf and performed the virtuoso “ Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F major ” by George Gershwin on. The concert was framed by Leonard Bernstein's rousing overture to the opera “Candide” and the 5th Symphony in E minor by Peter I. Tchaikovsky . The performance of Richard Strauss's monumental “ Alpine Symphony ” in May 2014 marked a high point in the history of the young orchestra NRW. With its huge cast, the work places the highest demands on the orchestra. In keeping with the motto “Forces of Nature”, the concert began with “Night on the Bald Mountain” by Modest Mussorgsky and Sergei Rachmaninov's symphonic poem “ The Island of the Dead ”.

2015 - 30 years of djoNRW

In 2015 the Junge Orchester NRW celebrated its 30th orchestra anniversary. Gustav Mahler's 6th Symphony was on the program at the beginning of the anniversary year , before the highlights of the anniversary year were the performances of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony in the summer, combined with a large choral project . The two anniversary concerts were under the patronage of the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hannelore Kraft .

To round off the anniversary, “An evening with Brahms” was on the program in October 2015 in the historic town hall in Wuppertal .

yourstage.tv

YourStage - Orchestra is an interactive learning platform for the symphony orchestra, which has been developed since the beginning of 2013 through the voluntary commitment of several graduates from various universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. Together with the young orchestra NRW, an audiovisual web application was created in a production in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf , which has been available free of charge at yourstage.tv since the beginning of 2015 and conveys the various instruments and positions in the orchestra to young people in an audiovisual manner. The special view into the orchestra - the user can choose his preferred musician's perspective from numerous camera angles - is supported by 3D audio sound and individual subtitles. Musical terms appearing in these subtitles are in turn explained in a lexicon, which rounds off the learning platform with almost 350 technical terms. Camille Saint-Saëns' symphonic poem Danse Macabre is the musical basis of the web application YourStage - Orchestra.

Cooperation with the Creative Church
