Dasylirion cedrosanum is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Sotol Cenizo".
description
Dasylirion cedrosanum forms a trunk 30 to 150 cm high that is sometimes branched. The variable, waxy bluish, dense leaves are 70 to 130 cm long and 15 to 20 mm wide. The irregularly arranged radial spines are directed upwards.
The panicley, woody, narrow inflorescence becomes 2 to 4 m high. The numerous flowers are green to cream-colored. The flowering period extends from May to August.
The elliptical to egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 6 to 7 mm long and 3 to 5 mm wide. The triangular, light brown seeds are 3 mm long and 2.5 mm wide.
Distribution and systematics
Dasylirion cedrosanum is a little-known, rare plant in Mexico and is distributed there in Zacatecas and Coahuila at altitudes of 900 to 2400 m. The species grows in open, flat terrain, in gypsum dunes, on stony slopes, associated with Yucca torreyi , Agave lechuguilla , Hesperaloe funifera and Nolina cespitifera . Dasylirion cedrosanum is frost hardy to minus 10 ° C.
It was first described in 1911 by William Trelease .
Dasylirion cedrosanum is a member of the Glaucophyllum section . The smooth, sometimes finely roughened, waxy, bluish leaves are typical. Its appearance is similar to Dasylirion wheeleri , which, however, differs in its flower and leaf structure. In the north of the range, overlaps with Dasylirion leiophyllum and Dasylirion texanum are known. Intermediate forms exist in this region.
