Dasylirion wheeleri is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Wheeler's Blue Sotol".

description

Dasylirion wheeleri forms a robust trunk 50 to 150 cm in height. The variable, irregularly arranged waxy, twisted, bluish leaves are 40 to 110 cm long and 15 to 25 mm wide. The strong radial spines are directed irregularly upwards.

The thin, paniculate inflorescence becomes 2 to 5 m high. The numerous flowers are yellow.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 5 to 7 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide. The triangular golden brown seeds are 3 mm long and 2.5 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from May to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion wheeleri is distributed in Mexico in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua and in the USA in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico at altitudes of 1000 to 1800 m. It grows on stony slopes, in open grassland and open woodland, associated with Yucca treculiana , Agave toumeyana subsp. bella , Agave lechuguilla , Nolina microcarpa and various Opuntia species.

It was first described in 1878 by Joseph Trimble Rothrock . Dasylirion wheeleri var. Wislizeni Trel is a synonym .

Dasylirion wheeleri is a member of the Glaucophyllum section . The leaf structure with the typical upwardly directed, irregularly arranged strong radial spines is characteristic. Intermediate forms with Dasylirion texanum exist in the overlapping areas .

Dasylirion wheeleri can survive short periods of frost down to minus 15 ° C when it is dry.
