Dasylirion graminifolium is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Zuccarini's Sotol".
description
Dasylirion graminifolium is stem-forming with a stature height of up to 0.8 m. The variable, green, smooth, toothed leaves are 90 to 120 cm long and 12 to 14 mm wide. The tips are fibrous.
The paniculate inflorescence is 2.2 to 2.8 m high. The flowers are white to cream in color. The flowering period extends from May to June.
When ripe, the paper-like, elliptical capsule fruits are 8 mm long and 6 mm wide. The brown, egg-shaped to elongated seeds are 3 to 4 mm long and 2 to 3 mm in diameter.
Dasylirion graminifolium is frost hardy to minus 5 ° C.
Distribution and systematics
Dasylirion graminifolium is widespread in Mexico in a narrow, limited area in the vicinity of San Luis Potosí and grows in association with Nolina humilis .
The first description was in 1838 by Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini . A synonym is Yucca graminifolia (Zucc.) Zucc. .
Dasylirion graminifolium is a member of the Dasylirion section . Although one of the first described species in the genus, it is rare and only grows in a limited area of San Luis Potosí. It is similar to the species Dasylirion texanum found in the north of the USA . However, there are clear differences in the leaf structure. In the botanical garden Hanbury impressive specimens can be visited.
