Dasylirion serratifolium is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet serratifolium means '(lat. Serratus sawn, lat. Folium leaf, leaf side) sawn leaf side'. An English common name is "Maguey Cucharita".

description

Dasylirion serratifolium forms a stem 100 to 200 cm high that is sometimes branched at the base. The variable, rough, blue to green, serrated leaves are 50 to 110 cm long and 10 to 30 mm wide. The irregularly arranged radial spines are directed upwards. The tips are fibrous when young.

The panicley, woody, narrow, red to purple-colored inflorescence is 2 to 4 m high. The numerous flowers are cream-colored. The flowering period extends from June to July.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 6 to 8 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3 mm long and 2 mm wide.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion serratifolium is distributed in southeastern Mexico in the state of Oaxaca at altitudes of 1800 to 2350 m. It grows in arid regions on stony slopes and in bushy woodland, associated with Yucca periculosa , Agave salmiana and Nolina species.

It was first described as Yucca serratifolia in 1830 by Julius Hermann Schultes . Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini placed the species in the genus Dasylirion in 1840 . Synonyms are Roulinia seratifolia Brongn. and Dasylirion laxiflorum Baker .

The rare Dasylirion serratifolium is a member of the Dasylirion section . The blue to green, rough leaves are characteristic. It is similar to Dasylirion lucidum , which occurs further north , but there are differences in the structure of the flowers and leaves.

Dasylirion serratifolium can withstand short periods of frost down to minus 10 ° C.
