Yucca periculosa (common name in other language: Izote Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The solitary , tree-shaped and branched Yucca periculosa reaches heights of 4 to 8 meters. The variable rosettes are 30 to 80 cm wide. The flexible, smooth, green and 30 to 70 cm long leaves form variable fibers on the leaf edges.

The dense inflorescence that begins between the leaves is 0.8 to 1.2 meters long. The fragrant, bell-shaped flowers are 3 to 4.5 cm long and 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The six identical bloom bracts are white to cream-colored. The flowering period extends from April to July.

Yucca periculosa is classified within the genus Yucca in the section Yucca , Treculianae series. It is related to Yucca mixtecana , Yucca filifera and Yucca decipiens . However, Yucca periculosa has softer, more variable leaves.

When it is dry, Yucca periculosa is frost hardy to –15 ° C.

distribution

Yucca periculosa grows in Mexico in the states of Puebla , Oaxaca , Veracruz and Tlaxcala in stony, hilly terrain at altitudes between 1550 and 2350 meters. This species is often associated with the agave species Agave stricta , Agave peacockii , Agave kerchovei , Agave marmorata , Agave titanota , Agave triangularis and Agave salmiana as well as with species of the genus Lysiloma and various species of cacti .

The first description by John Gilbert Baker under the name Yucca periculosa was published in 1870.
