Dave Madden (saxophonist)

David Hawley "Dave" Madden (born May 12, 1924 in Elkhart , Indiana ; † June 17, 2006 in San Francisco ) was an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , also baritone saxophone ) of the late swing era .

Live and act

Madden came to California with his family during the Depression era. At the age of 15 he began playing as a professional musician with Horace Henderson . The first recordings were made in 1945 when he was a member of Stan Kenton's big band . He continued to play with Tom Talbert and Dan Terry by the end of the decade . In the early 1950s he attended Westlake College of Music in Los Angeles. Madden then worked in the swing bands of Woody Herman (1954), Bill Holman (1955) Jerry Gray , Charlie Barnet and Rey DeMichel, in the early 1960s still with the Forrest Westbrook Quintet and in the orchestras of Si Zentner , Frank Capp , Dave Pell and Harry James . In the field of jazz he was involved in 37 recording sessions between 1945 and 1964. in the further course of his music career Madden played 25 years at Harrah's Casino on Lake Tahoe , where he accompanied guest show greats such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra . There he also played in the Count Basie Orchestra . Most recently he lived in Petaluma.

The jazz musician should not be confused with the reggae trumpeter David Madden (* 1943) of the same name.
