Dave McMurdo

Dave McMurdo (born March 4, 1944 in Isleworth , England , † June 13, 2011 in Eden Mills near Guelph , Ontario ) was a Canadian jazz trombonist , composer , band leader , arranger and music teacher .

Live and act

McMurdo grew up in Vancouver , where he studied music at the University of British Columbia . Early on he began composing and playing in a number of bands, including the Bob Hales Big Band . In 1969 he moved to Toronto and became a member of Rob McConnell's formation The Boss Brass and lead trombonist in the band Nimmons 'n' Nine Plus Six . In the 1990s he worked with his own band projects, such as the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra , which has existed since 1988 (with saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, among others ) and the Dave McMurdo Quintet . McMurdo taught at the Music Department of Mohawk College in Ontario from 1984 . In 1987 and 1988 he received a Canada Council Grant to study composition with Bob Brookmeyer in New York City.

Awards

McMurdo's Jazz Orchestra was nominated for the 1991 Juno Award for his debut album. In 1994 the orchestra was named Canada's premier jazz orchestra by Jazz Report Magazine .
