David Avshalom
David Daniel Awschalom (born October 11, 1956 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ) is an American physicist specializing in condensed matter . He is best known for his work on spintronics and semiconductors .
Career
Awschalom received his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his PhD in Experimental Physics from Cornell University in 1982 . He was a research fellow and manager of the Nonequilibrium Physics Department at the IBM Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights , NY . In 1991 he went to the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) as a professor of physics. In 2001 he also became Professor of Electrical Engineering at UCSB, where he was also Director of the Center for Spintronics and Quantum Computation and the California Nanosystems Institute . Awschalom Liew has been Family Professor at the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago since 2013 .
In 1992 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). In 2005 he received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize from the APS and the Agilent Europhysics Prize from the European Physical Society . In 2003 he received the Neél Medal of the IUPAP , in 2006 he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science , and in 2007 a member of the National Academy of Sciences . For 2015 he was awarded the Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize .
Due to the number of his citations, Clarivate Analytics has been one of the favorites for a Nobel Prize in Physics ( Clarivate Citation Laureates ) since 2018 .
