David Bartlett

David John Bartlett (born January 19, 1968 in Hobart , Tasmania ) is an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), who was Prime Minister of Tasmania between 2008 and 2011 .

Life

After attending school, Bartlett first completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), which he completed with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). He finished another degree in economics with a diploma and then worked as an employee in the public service.

After former Prime Minister Jim Bacon , who had lung cancer, waived his mandate , he was elected as a candidate for the Australian Labor Party in a by -election on April 1, 2004 in the Denison constituency for the first time as a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly , the lower house of the Tasmanian Parliament, and was a member until his resignation on May 13, 2011.

He was first appointed to a government in 2006 by Prime Minister Paul Lennon as Minister for Education and Skills . As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he became Vice Prime Minister in 2008 and also took on the post of Minister for Planning and Workplace Relations .

On May 26, 2008 Bartlett finally succeeded Lennon as Prime Minister of Tasmania and as chairman of the Labor Party of Tasmania. In the following years he took in his cabinet from 2010 to 2011, the office of the Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology (Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology) .

The general election of March 20, 2010 resulted in a stalemate in the House of Assembly. The actual election winner was the Liberal Party of Australia with 124,933 votes (38.99 percent) and a gain of 7.17 percentage points, while the Labor Party Bartletts got 118,168 votes (36.88 percent) and lost 12.39 percentage points. However, due to the right to vote, both parties received ten seats in the 25-member parliament. Bartlett then formed a coalition with the Tasmanian Greens , in which Nick McKim , the leader of the Greens, became Minister for Human Services, Community Development, Climate Change, Aboriginal Affairs, Sustainable Transport and Alternative Energy, and the Penitentiary and Consumer Protection, and became the first Green Minister was in an Australian government.

On January 24, 2011 Bartlett resigned as Prime Minister and ALP chairman of Tasmania and was replaced by Lara Giddings , who was previously Vice Prime Minister, Attorney General, Justice, Finance and Art Minister in his cabinet. From January to May 2011, he served in their cabinet as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice .
