David Bentley (Bishop)

David Edward Bentley (born August 7, 1935 - March 4, 2020 in Burton upon Trent ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Gloucester in the Church of England from 1993 to 2003 .

Bentley was born to William and Florence Bentley. He attended Great Yarmouth Grammar School in Norfolk . He graduated from the University of Leeds . There he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1956 . He did his military service as a Second Lieutenant in the 5th Regiment of the Royal Horse Artillery . In preparation for his priesthood, he studied theology at Westcott House Theological College, Cambridge. In 1960 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1961 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1960 to 1962 as vicar ( curate ) at St Ambrose's Church in the Whitehall district in Bristol and from 1962 to 1966 at Holy Trinity Church with St Mary in Guildford . Then from 1966 to 1973 was pastor ( Rector ) of Headley , in East Hampshire . He was also from 1973 to 1986 Country Dean ( Rural Dean ) of Esher and from 1986 Head ( Warden ) of the Community of All Hallows in Ditchingham . In 1986 he was ordained a bishop . From 1986 to 1993 he was suffragan bishop of the Diocese of Norwich in the Church of England as "Bishop of Lynn" . In 1993 he succeeded Bishop Peter Ball , Bishop of Gloucester in the Church of England. He retired at the end of December 2003. He was succeeded as Bishop of Gloucester by Michael Perham .

In 1962 he married his wife Clarice Lahmers. The marriage had four children, two sons and two daughters.

Membership in the House of Lords

Bentley served in his capacity as Bishop of Gloucester from January 1998 to late December 2003 until his retirement as Bishop of Gloucester as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords .

A total of twelve contributions from Bentley from 1998 to 2003 are documented in Hansard . He gave his inaugural address in the context of a debate on education policy in the UK. On March 20, 2003, during his tenure in the House of Lords, during a debate on the Iraq war, he last spoke with a brief question.
