David Bierens de Haan (born May 3, 1822 in Amsterdam , † August 12, 1895 in Leiden ) was a Dutch mathematician and historian of science .

Life

He was the son of the wealthy businessman Abraham Pieterszoon de Haan (* December 12, 1795 in Amsterdam, † October 25, 1880 in modern Oostbroek) and Catharina Jacoba Bierens (* January 9, 1797 in Amsterdam, † September 12, 1835 ibid) . After receiving various training courses, his father made him study law. In 1841 he moved into the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam . In the same year he enrolled at the University of Leiden on January 2, 1841 . However, his interests were more in the exact sciences, which he studied from September 1842. On May 15, 1847 he received his doctorate in Leiden with Gideon Janus Verdam (1802-1866) with the work De Lemniscata Bernouillana to the doctorate of philosophy. On August 28, 1848 he became a lecturer in natural history and mathematics at the grammar school in Deventer . During that time he published a variety of articles on elementary education and mathematics.

On May 5, 1856 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, for whose journal he wrote thirty-three articles from 1874 to 1893. He was also a member of the Dutch Society of Sciences in Haarlem, the provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences, the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy, foreign member of the Imperial Sciences in Kazan, member of the Academie Imperiale des science, inscriptions et belles lettres in Toulouse, the British Association for the advancement of science and the Danish Society of Sciences. In 1857 he became a school councilor in Deventer and from 1858 he was a council member responsible for various areas of education there. On June 21, 1863 he was appointed associate professor of mathematics and physics by royal resolution.

He took up this position on December 25, 1863 with the introductory speech Over de magt van het zoogenaamd onbestaanbare in de wiskunde . On December 24, 1866, he was appointed full professor. In this capacity he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1872/1873 . Since 1888 he was co-editor of the Oeuvres complètes of Christiaan Huygens and in 1892 edited the algebra of Willem Smaasen (1820–1850). He had a very extensive library on mathematics, the history of science, and education; this is now in the Leiden University Library . His most important mathematical achievement consisted in the publication of a very extensive integral table of certain integrals called Tables d'intégrales définies in 1858 and Nouvelles tables d'intégrales définies in 1867. On June 28, 1892 he was retired from his professorship by royal resolution and retired on Retired September 20, 1892.
