David Claparède

David Claparède (born February 6, 1727 in Geneva ; † June 12, 1801 there ) was a Geneva Protestant pastor and university professor .

Life

David Claparède came from the upper middle class Claparède family and was the son of pastor Jacques Claparède and his wife Anne-Madeleine (née Guainier).

He enrolled in 1746 to study theology at the University of Geneva , which he finished in 1750 and continued in 1752 at the University of Leiden . In 1758 he became pastor in Jussy and from 1761 to 1790 he was pastor in Geneva.

From 1763 to 1798 he gave lectures on exegesis and morality at the University of Geneva and was its rector from 1770 to 1774 . From 1795 to 1801 he was dean of the Compagnie des pasteurs , an organ that was supposed to control life in reformed Geneva .

In his work Considérations sur les miracles de l'Evangile ("Explanations on the miracles of the Gospel"), which was translated into German in 1774, he responded to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's criticism of the biblical miracles in the third letter of the Lettres écrites de la montagne .

David Claparède was married to Anne, daughter of Jacques Gallatin, lawyer and captain in the French service, from 1764 .
