Live and act
David Cox was the son of a blacksmith from Birmingham. After receiving poor instruction in an elementary school, the father let the boy work in his workshop. But the blacksmith's trade was beyond his strength, which is why he was sent to a clothing manufacturer, where he learned miniature painting . Cox later found employment as a paint pen and painter's assistant at the Birmingham theater. In 1804 he went to London to work as a scene painter at Astley - Theater to work, got there but no employment. He then studied watercolor painting under John Varley . From 1805 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts . Also published some books on watercolor and landscape painting . In 1813 he was elected a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colors . At that time he received the post of drawing teacher at the War School in Farnham, Surrey , but soon resigned from the position. From 1814 he lived in Hereford , where he taught in various schools and from where he often roamed England.
In 1826, Cox traveled to the Netherlands and Belgium . From 1827 to 1841 he lived again in London as a respected and successful artist. In 1829 and 1832 he made two short trips to France . But he did not leave England for most of his life. In 1841 he settled in Harbourne near Birmingham and found his inspiration in particular during stays in North Wales, where the charming mountain village of Betws-y-Coed was the focus of his activity. Since the number of his works was extremely large, they could be presented in an extensive exhibition in London from 1858 to 1859. Cox died in Harbourne in 1859 at the age of 76.
Various watercolors by David Cox are in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, Merseyside , England . The works were acquired in the art trade by the founder of the museum, the Viscount Leverhulme. Some of these have now been identified as fakes.
David Cox, called the Elder, was one of the most important English landscape painters and pioneered Impressionism . His son David (1809–1885), from his marriage to Mary Agg, was also a painter.
