David Friedrich Ignatius

David Friedrich Ignatius (born March 25 . Jul / 5. April  1765 greg. In Tartu , Livonia , † December 18 jul. / The thirtieth December  1834 greg. In Hageri , Estonia ) was a Baltic German pastor and theologian .

life and work

David Friedrich Ignatius was born in Tartu (German Dorpat ) in Livonia . His father was the Moravian theologian Michael Ignatius (1713–1777).

From 1777 to 1781 David Friedrich Ignatius attended school in Halberstadt . From 1781 to 1785, he studied Protestant theology at the University in Halle on the Saale . On November 3, 1791, Ignatius was appointed pastor of Hageri ( Haggers ) in his Baltic homeland . His ordination took place on January 18, 1792. On January 30, 1814 Ignatius was Assessor in the Consistory for Estonia, on July 3, 1833, Deputy Provost of the Provost West-Wierland . A year later, on March 8, 1834, he was appointed provost .

Like his father, David Friedrich Ignatius was close to the Moravian Brethren . He supported their work in Estonia. Ignatius was known in his community as an energetic clergyman. Among other things, he had a prayer house built in the parish of Hageri. Ignatius founded an educational institution (boarding school) at the pastorate in Hageri, where the pupils also received drawing lessons . His son, the later painter and writer Otto Friedrich Ignatius (1794–1824), received his first artistic training there.

David Friedrich Ignatius had a close friendship with his fellow student Otto Wilhelm Masing (1763–1832). Masing was 1821-1823 and 1825 the Estonian- language newspaper Marahwa Näddala-Leht out, which Ignatius supported. In 1817, Ignatius and Masing joined the Tallinn Lodge of Freemasons .

Private life

David Friedrich Ignatius was married to Magdalena Christina von Krusenstiern (around 1776–1842). The daughter Friederike Natalie Helene Ignatius (1798–1886) married the Baltic German painter Gustav Adolf Hippius (1792–1856). Her son was the architect Otto Pius Hippius (1826–1883).

After David Friedrich Ignatius' death, his son-in-law Carl Johann Koch (1803–1864), the husband of his daughter Johanna Wilhelmine Anna Caroline, succeeded as pastor of the parish in Hageri.

Literary works

In January 1829 the epic treatise The Good Heart was published in Tallinn ( Reval ) . A moral mirror in print (= Esthona , nos. 11 and 13). In March of the same year the treatise on Moral Affairs was published. Morality - morality - humanity! (= Esthona No. 21). The author of both works was either David Friedrich Ignatius or his son Otto Friedrich .
