Otto Pius Hippius (born May 5 . Jul / 17th May  1826 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † August 29 . Jul / 10. September  1883 . Greg in Kabolowka in Pargolovo in Saint Petersburg) was a Baltic German architect.

life and work

Otto Pius Hippius was born as the son of the Baltic German painter and lithographer Gustav Adolf Hippius (1792–1856). Gustav Hippius' father Thomas Hippius (1762–1819) came from theological circles and was a pastor in Nissi , Estonia ; Otto Pius Hippius' maternal great-grandfather was the Herrnhuter Michael Ignatius (1713–1777).

Otto Pius Hippius received artistic instruction from his father at an early age. He first went to Germany for training . In 1849 he graduated from the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe, Baden . From 1849 to 1851 he studied at the Imperial Art Academy in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg . He then worked as an architect and teacher at various art schools in Saint Petersburg.

In 1864 Hippius was admitted to the Russian Academy of Sciences . From 1879 he carried the title of professor.

In addition, Hippius was responsible for buildings in Saint Petersburg (main building of the Protestant hospital, production hall of the gas factory, residential building for officers of the Ministry of War) and in the Caucasus . In Azerbaijan , Hippius built an Armenian church.

In 1867 he took part in the tender for the Berlin Cathedral . In this context, Hippius' 22-page book “May the Cathedral of Berlin be a domed structure?”, Which appeared in the printing press of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg in 1871, also became known.

Private life

Otto Pius Hippius was married to the Baltic German Emma Karoline Charlotte Schmidt (1839–1924).
