Gustav Adolf Hippius
Gustav Adolf Hippius (* March 1 July / March 12, 1792 greg. In Nissi , Estonia ; † September 24 July / October 6, 1856 greg. In Tallinn ) was a Baltic German painter and lithographer .
Life
Gustav Adolf Hippius was born in the pastorate of Nissi near the Estonian capital Tallinn. His father Thomas Hippius was a Protestant clergyman. Hippius studied drawing with Carl Siegismund von Walther from 1810 to 1812 . From 1813 to 1815 he studied drawing and copperplate engraving at the Academy in Vienna .
In 1816 Hippius traveled to Munich and Salzburg . In Munich he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts . From 1817 to 1819 the three Baltic German painter friends Hippius, Otto Friedrich Ignatius and August Georg Wilhelm Pezold toured Italy . Hippius stayed in Rome until June 1818 and then stayed in Switzerland before returning to Estonia .
From 1820 Hippius lived with his family as a drawing teacher and portraitist in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg . In 1849 he moved to Tallinn, where he worked as a highly respected painter. There he died in 1856. Hippius is buried in the cemetery of Hageri (German Haggers ).

Gustav Adolf Hippius is best known for his accurate and sensitive portraits of Estonian women in national costumes. The idealizing images are heavily influenced by romanticism. The portrait of his friend and brother-in-law Otto Friedrich Ignatius (1852) as well as the portraits of Ludwig van Beethoven (today in the Beethoven House , Bonn ) and Johann Heinrich Pestalozzis , whom Hippius met in Switzerland, are also famous . From 1822 to 1828 Hippius' series Les contemporains was created with portraits of Russian politicians, church leaders and artists.
Private life
Gustav Adolf Hippius married Friederike Natalie Helene Ignatius (1798–1886) in 1820. She was the daughter of pastor David Friedrich Ignatius (1765–1834).
He is the father of the German Baltic architect Otto Pius Hippius (1826–1883).
