David Ginsburg
David Ginsburg (born September 5, 1920 in New York City , † March 9, 1988 ) was an Israeli chemist ( organic chemistry ) and founder of the chemistry faculty at the Technion .
Ginsburg lived in Tel-Aviv as a child , where he attended the Hebrew Herzlia-Gymnasium . From 1937 to 1941 he studied chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the City College of New York . He graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in 1941 and a master's degree in 1942 . Ginsburg received his PhD in chemistry from New York University in 1947 . From 1948 he was back in Israel and was initially at the Weizmann Institute and from 1954 professor at the Technion in Haifa, whose president he was 1961/62.
He was visiting professor at Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Brandeis University , the University of Paris and at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg.
Ginsburg dealt with morphines (total synthesis of morphine), colchicine , polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons , heterocycles with nitrogen components, reactions with tert-butyl hypochlorite and conformational analysis.
In 1983 he received the August Wilhelm von Hofmann medal , in 1972 the Israel Prize , the Weizmann Prize (1954) and the Rothschild Prize (1965). Since 1981 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was President of the Israel Chemical Society and on the National Council for Research and Development in Israel.
