tert -Butylhypochlorit is a chemical compound from the group of chlorine- containing organic chemical compounds . In contrast to the inorganic hypochlorites , tert- butyl hypochlorite isnot a salt , but a covalent compound and can formally be regarded as an ester of tert- butanol with hypochlorous acid .

Tert-butyl hypochlorite can be obtained by reacting a sodium hydroxide solution with tert-butyl alcohol and chlorine .

tert -Butyl hypochlorite can be used as a versatile oxidizing agent for converting alcohols to ketones, aldehydes to acid chlorides, sulfides to sulfoxides and hydroxylamines to nitroso compounds. The more reactive tert -butyl hypoiodite can be made from tert -butyl hypochlorite and a metal iodide. It can also be used to make 2-imidazolines and other chemical compounds.
