David H. Rosenthal

David H. Rosenthal (born 1945 in New York City ; died October 30, 1992 in Suffern ) was an American translator, poet, and jazz writer.

Life

David Herschel Rosenthal was a son of the literary scholar Macha Rosenthal and Victoria Himmelsteiner. Rosenthal studied comparative literature at the City University of New York , where he also received his doctorate. He translated from Catalan (including the 15th century Tirant lo Blanc by Joanot Martorell and Martí Joan de Galba as well as JV Foix , Mercè Rodoreda , Victor Català , Per Quart , Gabriel Ferrater , Joan Perucho , Vincent Andrés Estellés , Joan Sales ) and also from Portuguese and published his own volumes of poetry. A book about Barcelona was also published posthumously at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1988 he received the Catalan Creu de Sant Jordi for his translation work. He is also known for his book on hard bop . He was also a freelance jazz critic, including in Down Beat and Jazz Times. He died of pancreatic cancer.
