David Hamer (cryptologist)

David H. Hamer (* 1934 in Billingham , United Kingdom ; † April 3, 2017 ) was a trained physical chemist . After his training, which he also completed in the United States , and his military service in the intelligence service of the Royal Air Force , he also lived and worked in France and Germany . He lived in Bedminster ( New Jersey ).

He is mainly known for his work as a historian and cryptologist , which is reflected in numerous publications in these areas.

Act

David Hamer has a special bond with Bletchley Park

David Hamer dealt with classical cryptology, in particular with encryption methods of the Second World War . He was particularly interested in the various key rotor machines and methods for breaking them .

He was particularly interested in the Enigma key machine used in radio communications by the German military in World War II and its cryptanalysis , on which he has published a large number of specialist articles.

In addition, he was a member of the National Cryptological Museum of the USA , the Crypto Simulation Group and worked as an editor for the journals Cryptologia and Eye Spy . In 2000 he was awarded the special title of Visiting Research Scholar by the Bletchley Park Trust of Bletchley Park , the agency in the United Kingdom that successfully deciphered the secret communications of the German Wehrmacht during World War II and is now a museum. He received this honor at the same time as Frode Weierud and Ralph Erskine .
