David M. Brink

David Maurice Brink (born July 20, 1930 in Hobart , Australia ) is an Australian-British nuclear physicist.

Brink studied physics from 1947 at the University of Tasmania with a bachelor's degree in 1951. Then he was a Rhodes scholarship holder at Oxford University (Magdalen College), where he received his doctorate in 1955. 1954 to 1958 he was Rutherford Scholar of the Royal Society . As a post-doctoral student he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956/57 . From 1958 he was a lecturer and fellow at Balliol College again in Oxford, where he became a reader from 1988and retired in 1993. From 1976 to 1978 he was Vice Master of Balliol College. From 1993 to 1998 he was Vice Director of the ECT (European Center for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas) in Trieste and Professor of the History of Physics in Trieste.

Among other things, he was visiting scientist at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen (1964), visiting professor at the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Orsay (1969, 1981/82), at the University of British Columbia (1975), at the Universities of Trieste and Catania, at the Technical University of Munich (1982) and at the Missouri State University in East Lansing (1988/89).

In addition to investigations into nuclear forces, nuclear structure and nuclear reactions and the physics of angular momentum in quantum mechanics, he also dealt with the history of nuclear physics.

Since 1981 he has been a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 1982 he received the Rutherford Medal from the Institute of Physics . He has been an external member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala since 1992 . In 2006 he received the Lise Meitner Prize for his numerous contributions to the theory of nuclear structure and nuclear reactions over several decades, including fundamental work on the theory of nuclear masses using effective interactions of the Skyrme type, nuclear-giant resonances, clustering in nuclei and quantum mechanical and semiclassical Theories of heavy ion scattering and heavy ion reactions .
