David McWilliams (born July 4, 1945 in Belfast , † January 8, 2002 in Ballycastle ) was a British singer , songwriter and guitarist .

Live and act

McWilliams was born in the Northern Irish capital, Belfast. In 1948 his parents Sam and Molly moved with him to Ballymena , where he spent his childhood and trained as an engineer in a torpedo factory . After David recorded a demo tape, he was spotted as a talent by Mervyn Solomon and passed on to his brother Philip, owner of both the Major Minor Records label and the pirate station Radio Caroline . His debut single God and My Country was released in 1966.

His biggest hit, The Days of Pearly Spencer , which comes from his second album from 1967, did not reach the UK Top 10 in the original version ; Marc Almond only succeeded in doing this in 1992 with his cover version . However, the royalties did not materialize because McWilliams had lost the license rights to his music through management errors. In Germany, the song only entered the charts in 1976 thanks to a new release.

A quiet and humble artist, David McWilliams did not enjoy being on stage and in the spotlight, but toured with the Dubliners in the 1960s and occasionally performed at folk festivals in the 1980s.

After several other smaller successes such as Three O'Clock Flamingo Street , Can I Get There by Candlelight , Hiroshima or Letter to My Love , David McWilliams became increasingly silent. His death from a heart attack in January 2002 was only briefly in the Irish press rezipiert . He left two ex-wives and eight children.

He recorded more than ten albums, three of them by the end of 1967.
