David Norris Phelps (born October 21, 1969 in Texas ) is an American singer , songwriter of Christian pop music and keyboard player , who became known as the tenor of the "Gaither Vocal Band". He also released several solo albums.

Life

Phelps grew up in Tomball (Texas) , where he attended "Tomball High School" until 1988. This was followed by music and singing studies at Baylor University , which he graduated in 1992. There he conducted the “Baylor Religious Hour Choir”.

Gaither Vocal Band

In 1998 he joined the “Gaither Vocal Band”, which he left after a break between 2005 and 2009 in 2017 to pursue his solo career. His albums Revelation , Life Is a Church and The Voice landed in the top 15, his album Freedom in the top 10 of the "Billboard Christian Albums Charts". Phelps received music awards such as the Grammy Award and Dove Award . The video album Legacy Of Love achieved a gold award . His music video Classic was broadcast on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

David Phelps is married and has four children with his wife Lori Purtle, who also sing along to the Video Classic . As a whole family they can be seen in the video The Best of David Phelps from the "Gaither Homecoming Series".

In January 2019 Phelps was with part of his band in Bern / Switzerland and performed there with over 200 singers from the “Animato Choir” and the “Animato Symphony Orchestra”. His duet partner was his 21-year-old daughter Maggie Beth. He is known as the figurehead of Southern Gospel in the USA.
