David Seely, 4th Baron Mottistone

David Peter Seely, 4th Baron Mottistone CBE KStJ ( December 16, 1920 - November 24, 2011 ) was a British peer , soldier and politician of the Conservative Party .

life and career

Seely was born on December 16, 1920 as the son of JEB Seely, 1st Baron Mottistone (1868–1947) and his second wife Evelyn Izme Murray (1886–1976), daughter of Montolieu Oliphant-Murray, 1st Viscount Elibank (1840– 1927) born. He was a grandson of Sir Charles Seely, 1st Baronet (1833–1915). He was baptized with Winston Churchill and the then Duke of Cornwall , later Edward VIII , and Prince Philip as godparents. He attended the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth .

Seely served in World War II . He became Commander of the Royal Navy in 1955 . From 1958 to 1959 he was in command of HMS Cossack . From 1961 to 1963 he was Deputy Director ( Deputy Director ) of the Signal Division at the Admiralty. He participated in the Malayan Campaign from 1964 to 1965 and was Mentioned in Despatches .

In 1960 he became captain and served from 1963 to 1965 in the (D) 24 Escort Squadron and on the HMS Ajax . Seely retired in 1967 at her own request. From 1967 to 1969 he was Director of Personnel trg Radio Rentals Ltd . With the Distributive Industry Trading Board he was 1969-1975 and 1975-1981 director of the Cake and Biscuit Alliance .

From 1981 to 1999 he was Parliamentary Advisor and from 1981 to 1983 Export Secretary . In 1981 he also became DL of the Isle of Wight .

From 1986 to 1995 he was Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight and the last Governor ( Governor ) of the Isle of Wight 1992 to 1995, where the Seely family played a prominent role since the 1850s. Seely was from 1987 to 1991 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Bureau of Applied Sciences and was honored in 1993 by Bournemouth University with an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Literature . In 1984 he became Commander of the British Empire . He was also a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron .

He was Chairman of the Trustees of SANE , a mental health charity. From 1990 to 1993 he was President of East Wessex TAVRA .

Membership in the House of Lords

In 1966, after the death of his half-brother Arthur Seely, 3rd Baron Mottistone , Seely inherited the title of Baron Mottistone and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural address on April 27, 1967. He lost his seat under the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Honors

In 1989 Seely was awarded the Order of Saint John . He was a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Personal Management (now FCIPD).

Family and death

On September 16, 1944, he married Anthea Christine McMullan († 2010), the daughter of Thomas Victor Wallace McMullan. They had five children together, including three daughters and two sons. The eldest daughter died in 1955 at the age of 8.

Seely died on November 24, 2011 at the age of 90. His eldest son inherited the title as Peter Seely, 5th Baron Mottistone (* 1949).
