David Shambaugh

David Leigh Shambaugh (* 1953 ) is an American political scientist specializing in Chinese politics.

Life

Shambaugh studied at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington , where he also teaches today. He completed his Masters in International Relations from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University , his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan .

Shambaugh worked for various US government agencies as a consultant, including the Bureau of Intelligence and Research of the State Department (1976-77), the National Security Council (1977-78) and as "Acting Director" of the Asia program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (1987-1988). He also taught at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (1988–1996), and since 1996 he has been director of "The China Policy Program" at the Elliott School of International Affairs. Shambaugh was also the editor of the China Quarterly between 1991 and 1996 .

David Shambaugh is a recognized expert in the field of Chinese foreign, domestic and security policy as well as international relations in Asia in general. He often writes in international media or is quoted as an expert.
