The multi-colored Deutzia ( Deutzia discolor ) is a shrub with white flowers from the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). The natural range of the species is in China. It is sometimes planted as an ornamental shrub because of its decorative flowers .

description

The multi-colored Deutzia is a 2 to 3 meter high, emerging shrub . The branches carrying flowers are brownish, 5 to 15 centimeters long, loosely star-haired and usually two to four-leaved, rarely six-leaved. The leaves have a 3 to 6 millimeter long stem. The leaf blade is simple, oblong-lanceolate or oval-lanceolate, 5 to 10 centimeters long and 2 to 3 centimeters wide, pointed, with a wedge-shaped to broadly wedge-shaped base and a finely serrated edge. Five or six pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is greenish and covered with four to six-pointed star hairs; the underside is greenish gray and densely covered with ten to twelve-pointed star hairs. On both sides, especially along the leaf veins, some have an additional central hair.

The inflorescences are 6 to 10 centimeters long, loose, hemispherical umbels with 12 to 20 flowers . The flower stalk is 1 to 1.5 inches long. The flower cup is 3.5 to 4 millimeters in diameter, 3 to 3.5 millimeters long and densely covered with ten to twelve-pointed star hairs. The calyx tips are the same length or slightly longer than the fruit cup and are oblong-lanceolate. The petals are white, oval, 10 to 12 millimeters long and 5 to 6 millimeters wide. The outer stamens are 5.5 to 7 millimeters long, the inner 3.5 to 5 millimeters. The stamens are pointed and two-toothed, with the teeth not reaching to the anthers. The anthers are stalked and ovate to rounded. The three or four styles are the same length or slightly longer than the stamens. The capsule fruits are brown, hemispherical and have a diameter of 4.5 to 6 millimeters. The calyx tips remain bent back on the fruit. The different colored Deutzia blooms from June to July, the fruits ripen from August to October.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the Chinese provinces of Gansu , Henan , Hubei , Shaanxi and Sichuan . The differently colored Deutzia grows in thickets, on mountain slopes and on river banks at an altitude of 1000 to 2500 meters on acidic to weakly alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, humus and nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shady locations. The species is usually frost hardy.

Systematics

The different colored Deutzie ( Deutzia discolor ) is a kind of the genus of deutzia ( Deutzia ). It is assigned to the subfamily Hydrangeoideae and the tribe Philadelpheae in the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae) . The species was first scientifically described in 1887 by William Botting Hemsley . The genus name Deutzia is reminiscent of the Dutch councilor Johan van der Deutz (1790 to 1858) from Amsterdam, a sponsor of the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg , who named the genus. The specific epithet discolor comes from Latin and means “differently colored” or “colorful”.
