David Nathaniel Spergel (born March 25, 1961 in Rochester , New York) is an American astrophysicist .

Life

David Spergel was born as the son of the physics professor Martin S. Spergel and the lawyer Rochelle S. Spergel, b. Leffert, born. His brother Jonathan is a pediatrician. Spergel received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1982 , and masters and doctoral degrees in astronomy in 1984 and 1985 from Harvard University . William H. Press supervised his PhD thesis Astrophysical Implications of Weakly-Interacting Massive Particles . After another year at Harvard, he returned to Princeton University in 1986, where he became Assistant Professor in 1987, Associated Professor in 1992 and Full Professor in 1996. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the International Astronomical Union , the American Physical Society , the American Astronomical Society, and Phi Beta Kappa .

Spergels fields of work are wide-ranging. He examined possible components of dark matter . Together with Leo Blitz he discovered that the Milky Way is not an ordinary spiral galaxy , but a bar-shaped spiral galaxy . Spergel is part of the team that evaluates the results of the WMAP space probe. The publications cited by him, in which basic cosmological parameters were determined from the WMAP data, received the greatest attention .

Today, Spergel is also working on new methods of searching for exoplanets , including in the Terrestrial Planet Finder project . He is also involved in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT).

Spergel has been married to Laura H. Kahn since August 26, 1990, with whom he has three children. His hobbies are skiing and cycling.
