David de Sousa (Bishop)

David de Sousa OFM (born October 25, 1911 in São João de Alpendurada ; † February 5, 2006 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese religious priest of the Franciscans who was Bishop of Funchal between 1957 and 1965 and then Archbishop of Évora from 1965 to 1981 .

Life

De Sousa was ordained a religious priest of the Franciscans on July 18, 1937. On September 23, 1957, he was appointed Bishop of Funchal to succeed António Manuel Pereira Ribeiro and received his episcopal ordination on November 10, 1957 by the Patriarch of Lisbon, Manuel Cardinal Gonçalves Cerejeira and his co- consecrators, Manuel dos Santos Rocha , auxiliary bishop in Lisbon, as well Joaquim Rafael Maria d'Assunçâo Pitinho , Bishop Emeritus of Santiago de Cabo Verde . He held the office of Bishop of Funchal until November 15, 1965 and was then replaced by João António da Silva Saraiva . During this time he took part in the Second Vatican Council between 1962 and 1965 as a Council Father.

On November 15, 1965, de Sousa succeeded Manuel Trindade Salgueiro as Archbishop of Évora and held this office until his retirement on October 17, 1981. His successor was then Maurílio Jorge Quintal de Gouveia . During his tenure he was co-consecrator on May 25, 1965 of Manuel Ferreira Cabral and on October 4, 1975 of António Francisco Marques .
