The diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde ( Latin : Dioecesis Sancti Iacobi Capitis Viridis ) on the island of Santiago with its seat in Praia is a Roman Catholic diocese in Cape Verde and includes the southern archipelago . It is immediate , that is, not a metropolitan seat , but directly subordinated to the Holy See .

history

The diocese was detached from the Portuguese diocese of Funchal on January 31, 1533 and was subordinate to this until 1551, after which the Patriarchate of Lisbon as a suffragan . After the Mission sui juris Guinea Portoghese , today's diocese of Bissau , was spun off from it on September 4, 1940 , there were still 168,109 Catholics (95.1%) in 30 parishes with 7 diocesan priests , 18 religious priests and 9 religious sisters in 1950 .

On December 9, 2003, the also immediate diocese of Mindelo was removed from the diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde.
