David Alexandrovich Toradze

Dawid Alexandrowitsch Toradze ( Russian Торадзе, Давид Александрович , scientific transliteration Toradze, David Aleksandrovič ; born April 14, 1922 in Tbilisi ; † November 7, 1983 ibid) was a Georgian composer and university teacher.

life and work

In 1937 Toradze completed ten years of piano studies at the Tbilisi Music School. From 1937 to 1939 he studied composition at the Tbilisi Conservatory with Sargis Barchudarjan and piano with Anastassija Wirsaladze . He then continued his composition studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Reinhold Glière , which he graduated in 1941. In 1951 he completed postgraduate studies at the Conservatory in Tbilisi.

From 1953 Toradze taught orchestration and composition in Tbilisi. In 1973 he was appointed professor. Toradze also worked for the Georgian film studios and for the theater. Toradze was a board member of the Georgian Composers Association .

Toradze wrote songs and romances based on poems by Georgian poets, as well as music for theater and cinema. He wrote the operas Suramis Ziche (1942), Gola (Der Ruf des Berg, Tiflis 1947), Newesta sewera (The Bride of the North, ibid. 1958), the musical comedies Natela (ibid. 1948) and Mitel (The Avenger, ibid . 1949), the ballets Gorda (ibid. 1949) and Sa mir (For the Peace, ibid. 1953) as well as the following orchestral works: Symphony (1946), Festival Overture (1947), three suites (1942, 1943 and 1947) and the work African sketches for choir and orchestra (1965).

Toradze died on November 7, 1983. He was buried in the Didube-Pantheon cemetery in Tbilisi.

Personal

Toradze was married to actress Liana Assatiani . One of the couple's sons is the pianist Aleksandre Toradze .
