Dawid Grimm came from a Protestant family in Germany, from where she moved to Russia in the 1760s because of religious oppression. Grimm began his training in 1840 in the sculpture class at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. However, after only a year he switched to the architecture class of Professor Alexander Brüllow . There he received a small and a large silver medal for his designs at the end of his studies. Furthermore, in 1848 he received authorization from the academy to be sent abroad for study purposes. This was initially forbidden to him by Tsar Nicholas I because of the revolutionary movements in Germany, but approved in 1850 on the condition that the architecture of the Caucasus regions had to be researched beforehand. He took on numerous buildings and published them under the title “Monuments d'architecture en Géorgie et en Arménie”. The introduction and travel description were written in French, but trilingual captions in German, Russian and French were always found on the plates. Grimm also traveled through Turkey, Greece, Italy, France and Germany. In 1855 Grimm returned to St. Petersburg. Because of the extensive documentation he was elected to the Academy of Architecture. He was also employed in the Ministry of Transport. Large parts of his numerous church designs were also implemented. From 1860 to 1887 Grimm was also senior professor for architecture at the Academy of Arts. From 1887 to 1892 he was rector of the academy. Since he could not agree with certain views of the newly appointed Vice President of the Academy, Count Tolstoy, he renounced this position in 1892 and was elected an honorary member of the Academy.
