Days N 'Daze is a band from Houston ( Texas ) who play a kind of folk punk that they call "Riot Folk", "Rage Folk" or "H-Town Thrashgrass". The band is best known for their energetic live shows and their excessive touring through the US and Canada , playing the full range from house shows to music festivals . Her European tours have also taken her to Germany and Austria since 2016 . Her current album Show me the Blueprints was released in 2020 on the Fat Wreck Chords label.

history

Days N 'Daze was founded in 2008 by Whitney Flynn and Jesse Sendejas, who both grew up in Rosenberg, Texas . Sendejas and Flynn knew each other from high school and became a couple during that time. At first the band consisted of just the two of them: She, with a musical background from classical piano lessons at a young age, followed by a few years in the marching band at her junior high school, where she played the trumpet. He is a self-taught guitar player who was introduced to music at an early age by his father, a music columnist for the local Houston Press. Initially, however, the sound of a trumpet that is characteristic of Days N 'Daze was still missing, as Sendejas was of the opinion that it did not go well with the music they both played. But he changed his mind after a year or two of constant persuasion by Flynn.

Flynn graduated from high school early before Sendejas and enrolled at Texas State University in San Marcos . Sendejas dropped out of high school shortly afterwards and followed her without a degree to San Marcos, a student town that both of them could not stand. There followed a few years in which both, still a couple, were more or less constantly on tour and recorded their first four albums. These recordings were made then, as now, in a closet in Sendeja's father's house in Richmond, Texas . During this time the band also grew by two more members: Marissa Sendejas, Jesse's sister, on the washboard and Freddie Boatright on the washbasin bass . According to Sendejas, the choice for these instruments was initially more a question of cost. He and Flynn wanted to make punk music from the start, but didn't have the money for equipment, such as drums.

Flynn finally broke off her studies with a major in "Entrepreneurship" without a degree, which was partly due to the many tours and therefore too little time. According to Flynn, however, a number of other incidents were decisive, such as the death of her grandfather, who was a kind of father figure for her, and the approximately simultaneous separation from Sendejas. All this motivated her to leave the university town in 2012 and to live without a permanent residence for a while. Flynn now manages Days N 'Daze practically independently and takes care of the finances as well as booking tours. Since the band's popularity has grown steadily in recent years and management has become more complex, there are plans to continue their training in the “Music Business” area.

“We record everything ourselves; we book everything ourselves; we manage ourselves. "

- Whitney Flynn

Instead of ending their collaboration in the band after their split, both used the emotions involved to write and record Rogue Taxidermy . The album is to this day (as of 08/2018) her best-selling on Bandcamp and a YouTube video of the song Misanthropic Drunken Loner that appeared on it with over 3.2 million views. The album was released the same year as Oogle Deathmachine . In March 2017 they finally released Crustfall , an album on which u. a. Scott Sturgeon of Leftover Crack is represented. The name of the album is a play on words between crust punk and the practice of trust fall .

The dynamic between Flynn and Sendejas has changed a lot over time. While both still write the music for Days N 'Daze together, describing it as if two opposing maelstrom collide, it is difficult for both of them to travel on roughly the same tour bus without starting to hurt each other emotionally.

Days N 'Daze has been performing in their current line-up since 2014. As a replacement for Freddie Boatright, Geoff Bell was spontaneously recruited as a wash tub bass player at an Open Bucket Night in 2013, five days before an upcoming tour . Meagan Michelle came on board in 2014 because the then washboard player could only travel to a limited extent for legal reasons. Days N 'Daze have already performed or toured together with some well-known artists. These include: Leftover Crack , We The Heathens, The Infamous Stringdusters, MDC, Morning Glory, Night Gaunts (New Zealand), Cancerslug or the band of Black Flag founder Chuck Dukowski Sextet.

Side projects

Both Jesse Sendejas and Whitney Flynn have been involved in a number of side projections over the years. They play together in "Decathect", a band that is more reminiscent of "normal punk rock " with its musical layout with vocals (Flynn / Sendejas), guitar, bass and drums (Sendejas) . Flynn also plays the trumpet here. The name "Decathect" refers to the act of withdrawing one's feelings from a person, idea or object in anticipation of future loss. So far there is only one demo EP from Decathect.

Sendejas has been active with his sister Marissa in the band "Chad hates George" since 2012, of which two publications have so far existed. He is also part of the band "Escape from the Zoo", with whom he released the album KILLACOPTER (2017) and two EPs .

Whitney Flynn was an integral part of the music collective "My Pizza My World" with whom she released four albums or EP's before the collective disbanded in 2016. Today she occasionally plays concerts as a solo artist under her own name or her stage name "Death By Skwerl". In her solo appearances, she plays songs from Days N 'Daze and My Pizza My World as well as new pieces on the guitar and the ukulele. In November 2017 she went on a solo tour in New Zealand and Australia .

Flynn and Sendejas also appear in several songs from Dirty Harry's 2018 album Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Crying .

Trivia

Whitney Flynn taught herself to play the guitar within an evening when Sendejas couldn't play on a show.

"[...] and then Jesse couldn't make a show one night in Oregon. And so I went to a Guitar Center and bought a guitar, like super-glued my fingers and went online, learned our songs and played in front of like 400 people. It was fucking terrifying! But then I kind of forced myself into learning how to play the guitar that way "

- Whitney Flynn

In a 2017 interview, Flynn named Leftöver Crack and Neutral Milk Hotel as her biggest influences .

In 2018 some of the DnD members started to publish videos in which you can hear the band Dungeons & Dragons play. As an allusion to the identical abbreviation of both the band and the game name, this was referred to as DnDnDnD.
