Nuclear energy in Hungary
Currently (as of January 2018) four reactor units with a gross installed capacity of 2,000 MW (net 1,889 MW) are operated at one location in Hungary . The first commercially used reactor block went into operation in 1982.
The share of nuclear power in total electricity generation is around 50%. In 2015, 30 TWh of electricity was generated in Hungary , 16 TWh of which came from nuclear power plants.

The first experimental reactor was commissioned in 1959; the first commercially used reactor block followed in 1982 at the Paks nuclear power plant .
Paks Nuclear Power Plant
In February 2009, the then Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány (he was voted out of office in April 2009) surprisingly demanded that the capacity of the Paks NPP should be doubled to 4000 MW. Experts considered or still consider it impossible that the Hungarian state can raise the money for this expansion.
In April 2009, the Hungarian parliament passed a fundamental decision to start preparations for the construction of a new reactor block at the Paks nuclear power plant. During the economic crisis in 2009/10, Hungary got into trouble and had to ask the IMF for help. The floods in Central Europe in 2013 as well as the floods in June 2009 and May / June 2010 showed that there is a risk of catastrophic Danube floods.
A runtime extension process for the four reactors in Paks is ongoing. Security and control facilities worth around 20 million euros (installed by a consortium led by Siemens) are used as an argument against the original plans (the four blocks will be shut down between 2012 and 2017).
In January 2014, the incumbent presidents of Russia and Hungary, Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán , agreed on the construction of two VVER reactor blocks at the Paks nuclear power plant, each with an output of 1200 MW and construction costs of 10 to 12 billion euros, thanks to Russian loans to be funded by the Federal Atomic Energy Agency of Russia ( RosAtom ). The reactors should go online in 2023 at the earliest.
nuclear waste
In October 2008, a storage facility for low- and medium-level radioactive waste was opened in Bataapati (around 180 kilometers southwest of Budapest). From 2010 there will also be underground storage facilities. A repository is near Boda in the Mecsek Mountains, which is scheduled to go into operation in 2047. So far (as of 2010) there have only been a few surface examinations.
