Nuclear power in Pakistan
Currently (as of March 2018) five reactor units with a gross installed capacity of 1,430 MW (net 1,318 MW) are operated at two locations in Pakistan ; two more reactor blocks are under construction. The first commercially used reactor block went into operation in 1971.
The share of nuclear power in total electricity generation is around 5.5%. In 2015, 111 TWh of electricity were generated in Pakistan , 6 TWh of which came from nuclear power plants.
history
After the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) was founded, the first research reactor PARR-1, a swimming pool reactor with 10 MW, was built at the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology (PINSTECH) in 1965 . Construction of the first commercially used reactor block began in 1966; it went into operation in 1971.
The Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Pakistan is Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA).
Pakistani nuclear program
On the site of the Khushab Nuclear Complex there are several heavy water reactors that are used to extract plutonium for nuclear weapons. The Khan Research Center is located in Kahuta .
