Nuclear energy in the Czech Republic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Currently (as of December 2017), six reactor blocks with a gross installed capacity of 4,130 MW are operated at two locations in the Czech Republic . The first commercially used reactor block went into operation in 1985.

history

Czechoslovakia nuclear program

After the partition of Czechoslovakia

On December 31, 1992, the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic was dissolved. At that time, the Temelín and Mochovce nuclear power plants were still unfinished. It was not until May 1993 that the Czech government decided to complete the first two Temelín blocks.

The Minister of Industry Martin Kocourek ( Petr Nečas government ), who was responsible for the abolition of the Czech Renewable Energy Sources Act in 2011 and the new nuclear course, resigned in November 2011 because he had promissory notes worth almost 700,000 euros during his time as a member of the supervisory board of the semi-state electricity company ČEZ had accepted.

Dukovany nuclear power plant

The Dukovany nuclear power plant has a total of four units; the energy company ČEZ expected the fifth block in Dukovany and the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Blahutovice in northern Moravia in March 2010 . It is unknown (as of April 2014) whether these plans are still up to date.

Temelín nuclear power plant

The operation of the nuclear power plant Temelin in southern Bohemia has been conducting long been tensions between the Czech Republic and Austria, as the Soviet VVER reactors (see list) are controversial in their security. The IAEA Director General Mohammed el-Baradei declared Temelín safe in 2007.

The expansion of Temelín by two more blocks was planned, but was put on hold in July 2013 for economic reasons, as the expansion would not be profitable without subsidies. ČEZ manager Cyrani demanded a feed-in tariff for the generated nuclear power, as this is the only way for the power plant to compete with other forms of generation. After this was not approved by the government, ČEZ declared the project to be over in April 2014. The two manufacturers Westinghouse , Areva and a Russian-Czech consortium had applied for construction.
